Teaching and Learning Series - Spring 2014|New Instructor Seminars

The Spring Session is now over. Please check back in the fall for more educational opportunities.


The Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning offers a series of seminars each year for new instructors. Developed by University of Wyoming instructors, these sessions are designed to provide new faculty and graduate teaching assistants with some genuinely useful advice. Lunch will be provided. Sessions are applicable whether you are already in the throes of teaching, or simply preparing for future semesters. Please join and/or leave a session as your schedule demands.

Monday, January 27

Discouraging and Dealing with Plagiarism

The ease of access to information on the Web may be one reason why cases of plagiarism are on the rise. In this session, we will discuss ways that instructors can design assignments that teach students about this important topic, as well as reduce the opportunity for plagiarism to occur. We will also discuss what to do when you suspect plagiarism and what tools might be available to us to help confirm such cases.

Integrating Non-Native Speakers of English into Mainstream University Classes, Tony Becker, CSU

This session will focus on effective pedagogical strategies for engaging non-native English speakers, drawing on research, as well as faculty/student perspectives, about working with international students. It will address issues of cultural, educational and linguistic difference.

WyoCourses Training

CANVAS is the new learning management system (LMS) adopted by the university for use in both campus and online classes. Full implementation will take place by Summer 2014, when Canvas will become the sole LMS at UW. Learn the fundamentals of developing your course shell and navigating through the program.

***Special Notes! Please bring a laptop! Also, If you will be teaching in summer or fall, we will get you started with your specific course shell(s).

A Review and Discussion of the New USP 2015 Requirements for Com2 and Com3 (Communication Across the Curriculum)

This session will provide an overview of the new student learning outcomes for the different levels of Communication Across the Curriculum.  How will Com2 differ from WB? How will Com3 differ from WC?  The presenters will provide sample course syllabus examples and will introduce the Course Action Request Form for instructors wishing to teach a Com class.
