Writing Your Own Textbook: Planning
In this two-part series for faculty who wish to write their own comprehensive and original instructional materials, we will discuss
- authoring tools and platforms
- document structures and formats
- distribution mechanisms
A textbook is assumed to hold material that is modifiable but relatively static, intended to be completed and distributed to students before the start of the course. Although the writing will produce electronic files, the results should be suitable for both e-book and print (with some limitations on each). The follow-up session, on distribution, wil take place in the fall.
This workshop will also cover, briefly: (a) the incorporation of links and references to external materials, especially restricted UW Libraries resources via the proxy service, and (b) standards and good practices for accessibility; electronic books offer many adaptive options, and those options afford advantages to readers disabled and otherwise alike.
