All of UW's course platforms provide the first few facilities.
   

Home page

Provide a welcome message, description of the course, links to recent announcements and activities.
   

Announcements

Use Announcements to distribute information and notifications about activities or events relevant to your course.
   

File Services (or Doc Sharing or Resources)

Use the file services to distribute your teaching materials to students.
   

Calendar

Use the calendar to post information about deadlines, activities and events in the class.
   

Message Board or Discussion or Forums

Use discussions to set up, moderate, participate, and manage online student discussions.
    Email

Use the e-mail (or Messages) tool to contact some or all of  your students via e-mail.  Some platforms' tools will allow the option of internal messaging (in the course site), as well as the standard external e-mail delivery.

   

Chat

Use online chat to engage in real-time, unstructured conversations with your students.
The following facilities are provided only by our full course platform, eCompanion.
    Syllabus

Use this tool to distinguish one or more special pages as the Syllabus, for easy reference by students.

    Organization of Materials

Use units and content items to provide structure for your online materials, which can be text or media.

   

Dropbox

Use this class-wide conduit for the instructor to post, and students to submit, text-based assignments.
   

Journal

Use this pairwise conduit to exchange documents between individual student and instructor in a personal folder.
   

Gradebook

Use the gradebook to record, calculate, store, and distribute grade information to students.
   

Exams or Tests & Quizzes

Use Tests & Quizzes to create, edit and manage online assessments and to set up automatic feedback and grading options.
