WyoCourses Rapid Course Design Workshops 


We've streamlined this workshop to focus on the MOST ESSENTIAL tools to get your WyoCourses websites up and running as quickly as possible. Each 90-minute session will give you hands-on assistance setting up the basic functionality for your course. All sessions are held in Coe Library 510F.

Teaching and Technology (TnT): Teaching with Impact Invited Presenter Series

Learn from fellow UW instructors about their innovative pedagogical strategies and uses of instructional technologies to enhance teaching and learning. All sessions are held in Coe Library 506 (unless otherwise noted) from 12:00-1:30 pm and lunch is provided. Click here to register.

  • Date: Thursday, February 14 | 12:00-1:30pm | Coe Library 506
    Title: Engaging Students with Nearpod
    Presenter: Paula Kihn, School of Nursing (NOTE: Paula will present via Zoom)
    Description: The use of technology in the classroom keeps growing! Implementing technology that's intuitive, engaging and cost-effective for students and faculty is imperative. Also, sharing what is working and not working helps each of us with our own innovation in the classroom.
    As a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Nursing Education student, with a passion for teaching with technology, I implemented an innovative tool, Nearpod, into an Associate Degree Nursing program to improve the engagement of students. I am completing my work on my DNP project using Nearpod to determine if exam scores were affected by the use of Nearpod. Now, as a new BSN Completion Program faculty at UW I am looking forward to using Nearpod in my online courses to engage students, and create a sense of community while celebrating diversity in learning.

    Title: World Cafe to Promote Discussions
    Presenter: Mollie Hand, LeaRN
    Description: The World Cafe Method for hosting classroom discussions can work with smaller classes as well as large stadium style classes that do not usually offer as many active learning opportunities. The proposed session will utilize the method as a way of engaging the faculty in this strategy from within the method.
    This method works as follows: tables of three "guests" and one "host" sit at a table which can be set up to resemble a cafe table. The host begins with a warm welcome and introduction of the other participants. The conversations center around a common theme, and the host selects one member to create a graphic history of the conversation. After twenty minutes, each member of the group moves to a different new table, and one of the "guests" becomes the table "host" to welcome new group members. The importance of selecting the right questions and collecting responses will be emphasized in this session.

    Title: Creating Space for Sense-making of Concepts and Student-driven Learning Using Phenomena and Reflective Practice
    Presenters: Martha Inouye, Dr. Ana Houseal, and Dr. Alan Buss
    Description: Since the adoption of new science standards in 2016, Wyoming teachers are being asked to re-evaluate what science teaching and learning looks like, sounds like, and feels like. In providing professional development for in-service and pre-service teachers, we have found success in the use of natural phenomena, or observable events, alongside reflective practice as a strategy of introducing/framing units, creating more engagement and buy-in from students. The use of this strategy leads to student questions, which are used to drive the instruction. As a result, students experience higher levels of engagement and connection in the instructional units. 
    How People Learn II (National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, 2018), a research-based book on science teaching and learning, states that, “Quite literally, it is neurobiologically impossible to think deeply about or remember information about which one has had no emotion because the healthy brain does not waste energy processing information that does not matter to the individual (Immordino-Yang, 2015)” (p.29). We are creating relevant situations for students, within the classroom setting, that supports in making the content “important” to students. We also use reflective practice to help students retain and think metacognitively about their learning. Collectively, we have been using this strategy with K-12 educators, undergraduate students, and Master’s candidates. Its success across such a wide range of levels, content areas, and courses, suggests it as a useful approach, worthy of dissemination.
