2018 John P Ellbogen Summer Faculty Institute: May 21-23

Developing Research through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This year we found inspiration in the university strategic plan, focusing specifically on the vision (As the Equality State’s university, we strive to break through barriers and explore new frontiers of teaching and learning), and elements of the mission (promote student learning) and goals: “achieve consistently excellent teaching and mentoring that give students the knowledge, ability, determination and innovation to meet tomorrow’s challenges with sustainable solutions,” specifically by “incentivizing revision and development of courses and curricula that includes technology-enhanced learning, online delivery and high-impact teaching practices and embracing informed and innovative approaches to assessment and improvement of student learning.

 

With this charge in mind, the theme of this year’s summer institute is Developing Research through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). The summer institute will kick off a multi-phased, two-year project. Interested participants must apply in teams of 2–3 people to consider how they can develop SoTL research as a means to assess teaching effectiveness and improve student learning. We encourage the following partnerships, but are open to other partnerships as well.

  • A faculty and GA from the same department.
  • Two faculty, APLs, or GAs from the same department.
  • An interdisciplinary team of three faculty from different departments (i.e., FYS faculty, COM instructors, etc.)

GUEST FACILITATORS

We have invited two leading experts in the field of SoTL to facilitate this year’s Summer Institute.

 

Nancy Chick is the academic director of the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, the university chair in teaching and learning, and an English professor at the University of Calgary. As University Chair of Teaching and Learning, she leads a variety of initiatives and programs around the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and conducts her own research in SoTL. Nancy is also the founding co-editor of Teaching & Learning Inquiry, the journal of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL). Her edited books include, Doing SoTL: Thin Slices of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Action (Stylus, 2018 -in process); Exploring More Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind (Stylus, 2012); Exploring Signature Pedagogies: Approaches to Teaching Disciplinary Habits of Mind (Stylus, 2008).

 

 

 

Peter Felten is a professor of history, assistant provost for teaching and learning, and executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning at Elon University. His books include the co-authored volumes The Undergraduate Experience: Focusing Institutions on What Matters Most (Jossey-Bass, 2016); Transforming Students: Fulfilling the Promise of Higher Education (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014); Engaging Students as Partners in Learning and Teaching (Jossey-Bass, 2014); Transformative Conversations (Jossey-Bass, 2013); and the co-edited book Intersectionality in Action (Stylus, 2016). He has served as president of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2016-17) and the POD Network (2010-2011), the U.S. professional society for educational developers. He is co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development and a fellow of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.
