2019 John P Ellbogen Summer Institute

The annual Summer Institute provides a focused time for participants to explore course/curriculum redesign, engage in interdisciplinary discussions and exchange of ideas, and learn from experts in the field on how to develop and adapt their teaching to promote deeper learning. This year we will explore strategies that can be applied in all disciplines for teaching and assessing students' critical thinking.

“Critical thinking” has arguably become the most heated term in higher education, with a rapidly increasing number of articles published about its absence in texts ranging from scholarly journals to Inside Higher Education to the likes of Forbes.  Despite widespread consensus on its importance, few institutions have solved for how to cultivate longitudinal, value-added growth in critical thinking. But teaching students to think critically is possible. This year's presenters are experts in the pragmatic, interdisciplinary application of critical thinking. (Pearlman & Carillo).

When?

The 2019 Summer Institute will take place May 22 – 24.

Who?

We encourage applicants from all disciplines to apply in departmental and/or interdisciplinary teams of 3 – 6 members. Preference will be given to the following team configuration(s):

  • A department/unit head or assistant department chair/assistant unit head
  • One or more faculty, APLs, or adjunct faculty
  • A graduate assistant (optional)

NOTE: Eligible applicants must have an anticipated teaching appointment or graduate assistantship for the following academic year.

What?

As a team member in the John P. Ellbogen Summer Faculty Institute, you will:

  • Learn how to employ unique frameworks that have improved outcomes across other universities
  • Strengthen your ability to assess student work for critical thinking, and respond to that work to foster critical thinking
  • Employ research-based best practices to redesign elements of your courses and curriculum for critical thinking
  • Develop new course elements and ideas with colleagues in your department and across the disciplines
  • Interact directly with the presenters as you consider new opportunities for critical thinking in your classes
  • Exit the Summer Institute as a catalyst for campus change around critical thinking (Pearlman & Carillo)

Participants will also have an opportunity to develop a Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) project to further the work they started during the Summer Institute. More information about this will be provided at the Summer Institute. 

FACILITATORS

We have invited two leading experts in the field of critical thinking to facilitate this year’s Summer Institute. Founders of The Critical Thinking Initiative, Steven J. Pearlman, Ph.D. and David Carillo, M.A., hold a combined 35+ years in higher education and have spent the last eight years maniacally obsessing about critical thinking outcomes in education.

Recent Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network Award finalists for their approach to critical thinking, they regularly present nationally on critical thinking and related educational issues (Pearlman & Carillo).

FUNDING

Each participant eligible to receive supplemental pay will receive a $750 stipend in June 2019. Team members will have the option of completing a Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) project, beginning fall 2019, for an additional $750 stipend in spring 2021. 
NOTE: Participants must attend all three days of the Summer Institute to receive the stipend.
