2016 Active and Engaged Learning

The Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the John P. Ellbogen Summer Institute on Active and Engaged Learning, from May 23-26, 2016.

You may have heard the buzz about active and engaged learning as a tool for developing critical thinking. Perhaps you have already begun integrating active and engaged learning pedagogies into your teaching. If so, you may be interested in applying for our 3rd John P Ellbogen Summer Institute focusing this year on active and engaged learning. The institute will provide participants with a theoretical grounding in evidence-based, nationally recognized active and engaged learning pedagogies; key strategies and skills for integrating active and engaged learning into their course(s); and hands-on development support. Throughout the four-day program, participants will build a strong peer cohort as they share strategies, challenges, and successes related to active and engaged learning.

Todd Zakrajsek

Todd D. Zakrajsek, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as the Associate Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship Program.  In addition to his work at UNC providing resources for faculty on various topics related to teaching and learning, Todd serves on several educationally-related boards, such as the Journal of Excellence in College Teaching; International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; Higher Education Teaching Learning Portal; Education Research Initiative (Lenovo Computer); Technology Enriched Instruction (Microsoft); and Communicating Science in K-12. Todd is also serving a three-year term as an elected core committee member for the Professional Organizational Developers Network. His current academic work and publications pertain to faculty development, effective instructional strategies, and student learning. His most recent books include The New Science of Learning (co-authored with Terry Doyle; Stylus; 2013) and Teaching for Learning (co-authored with Claire Major and Michael Harris, Routledge Publishing; 2015). Todd has been a visiting professor and delivered keynote addresses at approximately 250 campuses and teaching conferences.
