Graduate Admission Requirements

Minimum course requirements:

  • PhD: Calculus I & II, Statistics, Intermediate Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory; Linear Algebra
  • MS Economics: Calculus I & II, Statistics, Intermediate Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory

Minimum test requirements:

  • 310 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for PhD applicants. Minimum of 153 on the Verbal section and 144 on the quantitative section.
  • 300 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for MS program applicants. Minimum of 150 on the Verbal section and 141 on the Quantitative section.
  • International applicants -- 540 paper based TOEFL; 207 computerized TOEFL; 76 Internet-based TOEFL; We will also accept official IELTS scores. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for full admission.
    • Waivers for the English Language Proficiency exam are very rare and require special permission. Please contact the department if you have any questions.
  • Note: The above are minimum requirements; meeting them does not guarantee admission or funding.
  • Fees: All students must pay an admissions processing fee of $50 through the Admissions Office.
  • Deadlines: The deadline for a fall application is February 15th, and for spring, the deadline is October 15. PhD students are only considered for fall admittance.

Please note:

  • If accepted into a graduate program, official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores must be provided.
  • A subject GRE test is not required.
  • The GMAT cannot be substituted for the GRE.
  • Although not required, you are welcome to submit a resume.
  • The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
  • You will be required to attach a statement of purpose to your application. The statement of purpose (one to three pages) should describe why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Economics; how your professional, academic, and personal experiences led you to pursue this path and how they have prepared you for success in this degree program; what you hope to do following the graduate program; what your research interests are; what/who faculty research is of particular interest to you; and why the University of Wyoming is a good fit for you. You do not need to describe a particular research topic as you would in a research proposal. Feel free to correspond over email with faculty whose work interests you, and then to include their names in your SOP.  

Financial Aid:

  • The economics PhD program offers competitive applicants an annual $16,785 assistantship plus full tuition and fees, including the full cost of student health insurance, for up to four years.
  • The economics MS program often has funding available for particularly strong students.
  • Importantly, all graduate students, including international ones, pay tuition at the in-state rate if they are awarded an assistantship.

We often conduct Skype conversations with promising applicants following an initial review of application materials but we do not require interviews. We also conduct information sessions with prospective students on various topics indluig one with faculty, one with Graduate students and one with the Graduate director and Graduate Coordinator.
