Graduate Admission Requirements

University of Wyoming's Business College, which houses the department of Economics and Finance

Minimum course requirements:

  • PhD: Calculus I & II, Statistics, Intermediate Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory; Linear Algebra
  • MS Economics: Calculus I & II, Statistics, Intermediate Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory

Minimum test requirements:

  • 310 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for PhD applicants
  • 300 GRE (verbal + quantitative) -- for MS program applicants
  • International applicants -- 540 paper based TOEFL; 207 computerized TOEFL; 76 Internet-based TOEFL; We will also accept official IELTS scores. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for full admission.
    • We waive the IETLS or TOEFL only if, by the time you would start our program, you will have a degree from an English-speaking university and will have lived in an English-speaking country for at least two years. We do not accept certificates from English as a Second Language programs as alternatives to the TOEFL or IELTS, because it is very difficult for us to gauge the quality of such programs. We view completion of such a program as preparation for the TOEFL or IELTS, not as a replacement.
  • Note: The above are minimum requirements; meeting them does not guarantee admission or funding.
  • Fees: All students must pay an admissions processing fee of $50 through the Admissions Office.
  • Deadlines: The deadline for a fall application is February 15th, and for spring, the deadline is October 15. PhD students are only considered for fall admittance.

Please note:

  • If accepted into a graduate program, official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores must be provided.
  • A subject GRE test is not required.
  • A written sample is not required as a part of your application.
  • Although not required, you are welcome to submit a resume.
  • The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4-point scale.

Financial Aid:

  • The economics PhD program offers competitive applicants an annual $16,785 assistantship plus full tuition and fees, including the full cost of student health insurance, for up to four years.
  • The economics MS programs offer competitive applicants an annual $6,039 assistantship, plus half the cost of tuition and fees and half the cost of student health insurance, for up to two years.
  • Importantly, all graduate students, including international ones, pay tuition at the in-state rate, provided they are awarded an assistantship.
