5530 Introduction to Research (3 credits). Offered every semester including online. Purpose
is to develop graduate students into intelligently critical
consumers of research through their understanding of both qualitative
and quantitative methodologies employed in educational research
and analysis of existing research of both types. Prerequisites:
15 hours of education courses and consent of instructor.

5550 Action Research (3 credits). Offered every fall through Outreach. Introduces experienced classroom teachers to action research methodology. Action research studies will be reviewed and critiqued. Students will learn to plan, implement, and write up an action research study conducted in a classroom setting. Prerequisites: graduate standing.

5600 Educational Research 1: Descriptive Research (3 credits). Offered every fall (campus) and spring (Outreach), sometimes in the summer. Covers
basic concepts of educational research design, statistics,
and measurement. The focus is on univariate descriptive statistics.
Students learn to develop survey instruments and questionnaires,
plan survey studies, and conduct appropriate statistical
analyses. Prerequisites: graduate standing.

5610 Educational Research 2: Group Comparison Research (3
credits). Offered every fall (Outreach) and every spring (campus) and sometimes in the summer. Covers
intermediate concepts of educational research design, statistics,
and measurement. The focus is on bivariate descriptive statistics
and inferential statistics. Design and analysis of results
from group comparison studies. Construction of attitude scales
and cognitive assessment instruments used in research. Prerequisites:
EDRE 5530 and 5600, or consent of instructor.

5620 Educational Research 3: Correlational Research (3 credits). Offered every fall (campus). An
advanced educational research, statistics, and measurement
course. The focus is on the design and analysis of results
from correlational studies with several independent variables.
Statistical topics include nonparametric statistics, multiple
regression, factorial ANOVA, and factor analysis. Includes
advanced topics in classical measurement theory. Prerequisites:
EDRE 5530, 5600, 5610, or consent of instructor.

5630 Educational Research 4: Multivariate Research (3 credits). Offered every spring (campus). Advanced
educational research, statistics, and measurement course.
Design and analysis of results from studies with several
dependent and independent variables. Includes multivariate
statistics such as MANOVA, discriminant analysis, canonical
correlation, multidimensional scaling, structural equation
modeling, logit regression. Measurement topics include generalizability
theory, item response theory, equating, and standard setting.
Prerequisites: EDRE 5530, 5600, 5610, and 5620, or consent
of instructor.

5640 Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education (3
credits). Offered every fall (campus). Research
methods course provides an introduction to the use of qualitative
or interpretive research methods in the collection and analysis
of data. Students will examine primary research as well as
secondary research sources which represent a variety of theoretical
and methodological viewpoints. Prerequisites: graduate standing
and EDRE 5530.

EDRE 5650 Advanced Qualitative Research in Education (3 credits). Offered every spring (campus). Purpose is to develop expertise in relevant research designs. Methodological issues such as trustworthiness of data, generalizability in qualitative research, researcher-participant relationships, and reflexivity will be discussed. Students will study and practice advanced qualitative data analysis strategies and engage in discourse analysis. Prerequisites: EDRE 5530, and EDRE 5640.

EDRE 5660 Research Proposal Writing (3 credits). Offered spring and summer semesters. This course is designed to prepare graduate students to plan, develop, and write research proposals suitable for thesis or dissertation, or for submission to funding agencies. Students will focus their own problem for research, conduct a literature review related to the problem, choose appropriate methods for investigating the problem, and write a research proposal. On-line dialogue among students and the instructor will provide opportunities to share knowledge and refine skills necessary in planning research. Individual consultation with the instructor will also be an integral part of the course. Prerequisites: Graduate standing EDRE 5530, or the equivalent, or consent of instructor.
