Literacy Research Center & Clinic: Taking a look inside

Check out the LRCC photo gallery!

Soon after stepping into the UW Literacy Research Center and Clinic (LRCC), it becomes clear that this is an extraordinary facility for supporting literacy education on campus and beyond.

Housed on the first/ground-level floor of the Education Annex, adjacent to Lewis Street on the northern edge of the campus, the Center is an inviting hub for literacy education research and program development.

The LRCC was built to support distance-delivered instruction and professional development. It also was designed to be welcoming and conducive to learning, exploring, and building literacy skills.

This is a space that is a really inviting place, where you could go to do a multitude of things with verbal and visual texts and, in the process of doing those things, improve your literacy skills without really even knowing that's what you're doing, literacy education faculty member Vicki Gillis says.

Within the LRCC walls are:

  • Offices for Gillis and fellow Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair in Literacy Education George Kamberelis.
  • A suite of office space supporting graduate students engaged in literacy education research.
  • A dedicated literacy library.
  • Two wired conference rooms that allow LRCC faculty and staff to connect remotely to sites around Wyoming and beyond. These rooms may be used for meetings, workshops, and remote delivery of professional development consultation and instruction.
  • Four dedicated tutoring rooms, allowing researchers and instructional staff to monitor and record tutoring sessions and provide live feedback during remote observations.
  • A large, open space at the center of the facility, where parents and families can relax and where small groups can convene to work on projects.
  • Offices reserved for visiting faculty and researchers.
  • Office for the facility's operations director.
