Epic service project effort leads to major coat drive

success by College of Education freshman seminar students

More than 340 coats, several hats and multiple mitten sets are headed to Laramie residents in need this Christmas, thanks to the efforts of University of Wyoming freshmen athletes enrolled in a College of Education class.

Students in Deborah McGriff’s E.P.I.C. Leadership class, one of several freshman year seminars launched at UW this fall, spent a month soliciting donations from Laramie residents for their service project, “Team Up 2 Warm Up.” The class posted drop-off boxes on campus, at several local schools, a church, and a local business from late October through November.

Class members, all UW student athletes, chose the project and focus.

“They were assigned to come up with a service project in which they could make a difference in the local community,” McGriff, an associate professor in the UW Counselor Education program, says. “They researched Albany County and the Laramie area and were surprised at the poverty rate for the county. They brainstormed several projects and selected a warm clothing/coat drive to address what they felt would be an important need - good winter coats.”

Clothing donations collected during the drive will benefit Laramie nonprofit Interfaith Good Samaritan.
E.P.I.C. Leadership (Experiential, Participatory, Image-Driven and Connected) is designed to teach habits and attitudes of effective leadership. The class is designed to provide students with the understanding of what it means to think and act like a leader no matter what their role is in a group, an organization, or in the community. It is adapted from a curriculum called Habitudes© from Growing Leaders.  E.P.I.C Leadership is designed to fulfill the requirements of UW a first year seminar.
