Dousay co-edits latest edition of

classic instructional design text

Congratulations to Tonia Dousay, assistant professor of professional studies, for her role in launching the latest edition of a classic instructional design text.

Dousay co-edited the fifth edition of The Survey of Instructional Design Models with Rob Maribe Branch, professor and head of the Department of Career and Information Studies at the University of Georgia.

The Survey of Instructional Design Models is a legacy project that began with  Kent Gustafson in 1981 as a monograph to explore both the definition and origins of instructional design. Through the various editions, which saw the addition of Branch on the third edition, Gustafson and Branch have refined a taxonomy for classifying commonly used instructional design models and discussed the pros and cons of the various models within the taxonomy context.

The fourth edition was released in 2002 and focused on the diversity of models in use as well as the blossoming field of instructional design in general. Since the book's inception, instructional design degree programs commonly require or reference the book, especially in introductory coursework to assist students with learning and applying instructional design.

The text often is referred to as "the pencils book" due to the cover art. The fifth edition maintains the iconic cover, only changing the color from red (fourth edition) to blue (fifth edition) and title from "Instructional Development Models" to "Instructional Design Models."

Dousay’s role in the fifth edition focused on updating and expanding the instructional design models to reflect current practices in both education and industry. She also re-drew many of the figures in the text using LucidChart to make sure that readers could accurately review the different models. Some of the models were initially developed between 1975 and 1999, and the figures were poor reproductions from earlier publications.

“To participate in such a project has been both an honor and an exercise in applied scholarship,” Dousay says. “I referenced the fourth edition often as a graduate student, using it when I drafted one of my more popular articles, ‘Analyzing and Evaluating the Phases of ADDIE.’ We include the text in ITEC 5160, “Introduction to Instructional Design,’ here at UW, asking students to review the various models within the context of their course project and create a visual representation of their own custom instructional design model.”

“Knowing that students will begin using the fifth edition soon gives me pause to ensure that future editions of the text maintain the integrity established by Drs. Gus and Branch. It also makes me proud knowing that we will have a lasting impact on the field of instructional design.”
