Melissa McGee receives major

military counseling scholarship

A University of Wyoming graduate counseling student recently received a significant financial boost to support her educational goals as a 2016 recipient of the NBCC Foundation military scholarship.

Melissa McGee of Laramie will receive $5,000 to support her counseling education and recognize her commitment to the underserved from the foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC). The military scholarship is awarded to service members, veterans and their spouses who are pursuing a counseling education and commit to serving fellow military personnel, veterans and families upon graduation.

McGee is both a UW student and graduate. Currently, she is working on a master of science in school counseling. Melissa already holds a UW bachelor of arts degree (2003) in elementary education.

As a licensed counselor, McGee will be able to make a bigger difference and create new programs to encourage resiliency in both schools and military families. This scholarship will help her achieve her goal of proactively giving military families the needed tools, strategies, and support that so often comes too late.

"It was a great honor to be selected as one of the 2016 NBCC Scholars,” McGee says. “In becoming a counselor I will continue to advocate for the military family and young children that do not have always have a voice loud enough to be heard.”

McGee adds that her passion is “to continue to impact others through community service and my role as a counselor. The NBCC scholarship and continuing educational opportunities will play an integral part in making this happen.  Making a difference and being there for others is my forever mission, this distinction from the NBCC is definitely a huge stepping stone along my journey."

NBCC is the nation’s premier professional certification board devoted to credentialing counselors who meet standards for the general and specialty practices of professional counseling.
