Mary Garland Early Career Fellowship | College of Education

Samara Madrid (2010-2012)

Samara Madrid was the 2010 recipient of the Mary Garland Fellowship. Funding from the fellowship allowed her to conduct, publish and present research on teachers and children’s emotional lives in early childhood education. Samara’s work is collaborative and ethnographic, allowing for the voice of the teacher and the child to be highlighted in her work. As such, the project resulted in several co-authored publications and conference presentations with the lead preschool teacher, Eleanor Frye, and curriculum coordinator, Nikki Baldwin, from the University of Wyoming Early Care and Education Center. This first piece was published in The Voice for Children on Campus, the journal for the National Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers. The article addressed the practical applications of the research giving national recognition to the UW Early Care and Education Center as a campus center committed to engaging in and producing collaborative research. It also raised awareness about the practical and theoretical implications of teacher emotion and socially just practices from multiple perspectives. The second collaborative piece is being published in the Journal of Early Childhood Research, which is a leading international research journal that focuses on learning and development from various disciplines. The article illustrates how emotional discomfort, from the teacher’s perspective, can provide productive grounds for reflection, disequilibrium, and dialogue about just and unjust early childhood classroom practices. Samara recently published a co-edited volume in the Hampton Press Discourse and Social Processes series titled: From toddlers to teachers: Learning to see and influence the school and peer cultures of classrooms, and continues to do collaborative research with scholars and teachers, both locally and nationally, to further explore the emotional worlds of teachers and young children and the promotion of well-being in classrooms.
