Mary Garland Early Career Fellowship | College of Education

Leslie Rush (2002-04)

Leslie S. Rush, associate professor in the Department of Secondary Education, was a recipient of the Mary Ellbogen Garland Early Career Fellowship in 2002. With the support of the fellowship, Leslie was able to complete work on several projects that were in progress at the time. The first of these projects, a chapter reviewing literacy programs at the secondary level, was subsequently published in Research and Practice in Adolescent Literacy, edited by Janice Dole and Tamara Jetton. She also completed an analysis of data from a study examining a summer tutoring program for junior high students; this study was published in Reading Research and Instruction. The fellowship also allowed Leslie to undertake several new projects:

  • an analysis of multigenre, creative writing in preservice teacher classrooms and its impact on making connections between theory and practice, published by The Teacher Educator;
  • an evaluation of the work of the Wyoming Writing Project in K-12 Wyoming classrooms, which led to several conference presentations;
  • and a book review on Embodied Literacies: Imageword and a Poetics of Teaching by Kristie Fleckenstein, published in the Journal of Literacy Research.
