The English as a Second Language Endorsement Program provides a Wyoming state endorsement that can be attached to any teaching license. It focuses on both the theory and practice of language sensitive pedagogy that builds towards the specific attention to English as a second language methodology.
The English as a Second Language Endorsement Program prepares teachers to work with the growing number of second language learners in Wyoming and surrounding states.
What is required?
The state of Wyoming has 10 standards related to English as a Second Language. Toward that end, the University of Wyoming has had an endorsement program approved that helps candidates meet these standards, by taking four courses (13 units) and engaging in an additional practicum (2 units).
These courses are:
Fundamentals of Linguistics (ENGI/LANG 4750/3 units)
Sociolinguistics (ENGI/LANG 4770/3 units)
Introduction to Second Language Acquisition** (EDCI 4700/3 units)
English as a Second Language: Theory and Methods (ENGL 5030/4 units)
Practicum in English as a Second Language** (EDCI 4800/2 units)

* Prerequisites
Students must have a junior standing to begin taking the courses. ENGL 5030 has LANG 4750, LANG 4770, and EDCI 4250 as prerequisites. Practicum has all four courses as prerequisites* Undergraduate credit
Yes, though you cannot receive the endorsement until you have completed your teaching credential requirements. Be sure to request that your placement for student teaching include a location where you will have an opportunity to work with second language learners.
* Graduate credit
Yes. In fact 12 of the units can count as part of an ESL emphasis for the master's in teaching and learning (College of Education, Curriculum and Instruction). In effect, you would only be 18 units from completing the master's degree program requirements.
TEACHING LICENSE
* You cannot earn an ESL endorsement from the State of Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board without a Wyoming Teaching License.
