Literary Studies Minor

If you like to read books, watch movies, develop arguments, think critically about the world around you, discuss big ideas with friends and colleagues—and to do all of the above in small classes with one-on-one attention from great faculty members—then the Literary Studies Minor is for you!

 

Course Requirements: (18 hours)

1. Gateway to the English Major—ENGL 2025: Introduction to English Studies (COM2; 3 credits)

An introduction to all the English major has to offer!  Students will learn about literature, rhetoric, writing, and culture, and will read and discuss exciting texts with a small group of classmates.

2. Historical Period Classes (take any 2; 6 credits)

Take any two of the following historical period courses:

ENGL 2425 (Survey I: Literatures written in English through 1750) (3 credits)
ENGL 2430 (Survey II: Literatures written in English, 1750-1865) (3 credits)
ENGL 2435 (Survey III: Literatures written in English, 1865-present) (3 credits)
ENGL 2340 (Intro to African-American Literature) (3 credits)
ENGL 2350 (Intro to Native American Literature) (3 credits)
ENGL 2360 (Intro to Mexican-American Literature) (3 credits)
ENGL 3200: Medieval Literature (3 credits)
ENGL 3300: Shakespeare/Renaissance Literature (3 credits)
ENGL 3400: 18th Century Literature (3 credits)
ENGL 3500: 19th Century Literature (3 credits)
ENGL 3600: 20th Century & Contemporary Literature (3 credits)

The focus of each of these classes will vary by instructor.  Sample course topics include Modern British Literature, Victorian Women Writers, Contemporary Poetry, Chaucer, 18th Century Literature and Ecology, etc. 

3. Take any additional 3 upper-division literature courses. Please consult with department for options in this category.

Pursue whatever type of literature interests you most!  Sample courses include Literature of Enslavement, Contemporary Irish Literature, Comedy Theory, The American Dream, Jane Austen, Shakespeare’s Comedies, etc.

 

Note: This minor is available only to non-English majors and non-English Education majors.
