Undergraduate major in ENR

The ENR undergraduate major is essentially a double major, in that students must complete the requirements of a second "affiliated major" in addition to the requirements of the ENR program (although some courses will fulfill requirements in both majors). In this way, the ENR major adds a breadth of knowledge to the depth of understanding achieved in a traditional discipline. With careful planning, many students are able to complete the ENR double major in little or no additional time because many of the ENR core courses and distribution classes also fulfill University Studies requirements.

Some things to remember:

  • The ENR major is available to any undergraduate student completing a bachelor's degree program at UW. Given the interdisciplinary nature of ENR issues, every major is an appropriate complement to studies in ENR.

  • Either ENR or the affiliated discipline may be listed first on the student's transcript. Although advising materials (e.g., the student's PIN or PERC numbers) are sent to the department listed first, students should be advised by both departments to determine course schedules, eligibility for graduation, etc.

  • To declare an ENR major, students must complete a "Declaration of Second Major" form, available at the SENR office (210 Wyo Hall), which must be signed by the SENR Director and the department head of the student's affiliated major department. The student is then responsible for submitting the completed form to Registration and Records (167 Knight Hall).

  • Regardless of which major is listed first on the student's transcript, the diploma is issued by the college of the student's affiliated major.

  • Prior to graduation, each student is required to schedule an exit interview with SENR so that we may improve the program through student feedback.

Major Requirements

The ENR major requires a minimum of 34 credit hours in ENR core courses and distribution courses in addition to the curriculum requirements in the student's affiliated major. The 1991 and 2003 University Studies designations are shown in parentheses.

Distribution Courses - 18 credit hours
In fulfilling these requirements, students may take a maximum of one course in the department of their affiliated discipline. Students may not count any course toward the fulfillment of more than one of the distribution requirements. Special topics courses offered from time to time may also be accepted toward the appropriate distribution requirement, subject to approval by the SENR advisor.

NOTE:  The distribution menus that follow are applied to all students who registered for the ENR major after January 1, 2004.  Students who registered prior to that date would use the old distribution menus.  Students who registered prior to January 1 may complete courses from either the new or the old distribution menus.
