1. Extreme congestion in the area between Snowy Range Ski Area turnoff and Green Rocks
& beyond. Mostly, but not exclusively, caused by large vehicles & trailers used by
snowmobiles - parked on both sides. 2. Snowmobiles traveling too fast in congested areas
endangering people, especially children, and dogs. 3. Air pollution in the parking area.
Parking at the end of Hwy 130 is a joke! In the last 10 years the area has become so
congested it is dangerous. It's stinky, noisy, crowded, dangerous situation.
Air pollution is a concern, noise is outrageous.
Large trucks rolling large trailers on snow pack roads are bad news. There are way too
many bad drivers with large trailers on the roads in the winter.
Snowy Range summer camping is well equipped w/ access roads & campsites. Winter
use is limited by too little snowplowing & no access to RV & tent camping
sites & too few parking lots.
Parking @ Green Rock. Obviously doesn't fill the "demand" as a typical weekend
has vehicles spread over a couple miles of highway shoulder. For "non-motorized
travel", parking a mile from the trailhead leads to conflict with motorized users.
Would like to see more parking available so more winter recreationalists can come and
use it.
The main issue in my opinion is that contrary to Ev's statement that "no one group
will be the loser" will not be the case. The end result of all this will be 1)
Parking restrictions i.e. less available parking, 2) less area of use for snowmobiles, 3)
a "foot in the door" for the enviros i.e. no motorized use but on severely
restricted trails.
I've been snowmobiling the Snowy Range for 3 years now. I really don't have any issues
with parking. I think we all deserve to use this area. Closing it down to either group
would be wrong!!
1. Air pollution by snowmobiles at parking area and in backcountry. 2. Snowmobiles do
not stay in designated areas. 3. Too many snowmobiles beyond carrying capacity.
There's a comment on this board that snowmobilers don't stay in their designated areas
---- where is our designated parking? I haven't seen a sign for designated parking!!
Traditional users of non-motorized recreation in competition with large rig &
trailers for parking.
Parking at the end for 130 is a major problem. All groups are forced to start out from
one congested location. It appears that the first 2-3 miles from the end of Hwy 130
creates most of the problem between snowmobilers and skiers. Something needs to be done on
that end of the road.
Hwy 130
No access for skiers if parking is taken
Air pollution
Noise pollution
Parking near trailheads for skiers. I'm not walking the highway w/ gear for 5 mi. Don't
need much - we have no trailers - but enforce it.
Why aren't the skiers using the lots down below that snowmobilers are not allowed to
use?
Parking is adequate for all uses. I usually go after 12:00 noon and there is never a
problem finding a spot. A bigger turnaround would be advantageous. This is a non issue.
Why can't U.S.F.S. supply parking areas!
No parking available for cross country skiers in Libby Flats Area
Limit the amount of parking to limit the amount of traffic
Parking permits should be mandatory.
Traffic & parking problems exist when not enough outlets are available. The problem
is then compounded by mixing user's groups trailheads. More separate activity accesses
& parking need to be available. One older parking facility was lost due to poor P.R.
with a local landowner by the Forest Service.
Not enough parking space along highway
Snowmobile traffic on trails gets congested and some people ride like crazy
Too many people especially Colorado
Plowing the parking lots
Overcrowding of all parking lots, nowhere to park. Very severe overcrowding on top at
Green Rocks and on top. Albany parking lot.
No plowing of parking lots
Rude out of state people
Air pollution, noise pollution, unenforced parking violations, safety concerns
Many skiers and snowmobilers speed thru Centennial daily in front of our school and thru
our community
The pollution in the Snowy Range - "Main Bow" parking lot is often
overwhelming - as is the noise - My experience is that I've avoided the parking lots on
weekends/holidays. Would never even consider going to Albany or Fox Park as a skier. Do
not feel safe skiing on the Hwy 130 on weekends with my kids & dogs.
People not willing to get along with other users
Dogs running around unleashed
Never enough parking
Lack of Forest Service effort to fix the problems
Lack of enforcement FS & highway dept
Congestion - vehicles out of hand
Violations of day use parking areas - not charged
Parking along highway does not provide funding resources for FS - but public lands
absorbing impact
Congestion dangerous/elevated pollution
Too many users; especially snowmobilers
I can't have my dog off a leash
I feel like I'm going to get run over by cars & snowmobilers
Too much pollution
As a member of organized search & rescue crew, I am concerned about getting
emergency vehicles to the end of highway 130 (Green Rock) during blizzard conditions and
high use days. It is critical that the Green Rock area be regulated and plowed so that
search & rescue vehicles and personnel can park there and do their task safely &
efficiently.
I don't even bother to recreate on 130 anymore there are just too many people. After 25
years, I ski on 230.
High speed of a few (+/- 30%) snowmobilers when passing close to backcountry skiers
Polluted air in parking area due to the warming up of the snowmobiles especially on days
of little wind or inversions
We never see skiers after we leave the lot. There is no problem.
There is a problem at the Green Rock picnic area. Cars park on both sides of the road.
They should not b e allowed to go beyond the picnic area, as the turn around then becomes
impossible. For skiers the distance to trails can become very far. - skier
Parking lots are too, small need better parking
There is a big problem with parking on weekends. I believe the lots need enlarging. This
will alleviate some safety issues I have seen with traffic
There should be no camping in vehicles in the parking areas
Every day in the winter that I go to the end of the Snowy Range road (Green Rock), there
are 15-20 snowmobile trailers parked past the sign that reads "No trailers beyond
this point".
Need more parking
Wyo takes in mega bucks on user fees - why not expand some parking areas
Lack of good parking & trailheads to backcountry skiing. Open up Silver Run to
skiers. Snowmobilers don't use Silver Run or Libby Creek and won't care.
If Rabbit Ears/Steamboat is your solution to parking please be advised to skiers have excess
parking areas and still park in snowmobile areas. I travel RE on a regular basis and rarely
see cc parking lots gull but experience major parking problems because of over crowding -
the VAST majority of winter users are snowmobilers that remain all day - not just a
few hours (cc skiers)
Charge nonresidents to park
This is a issue, but skiers can pack skis easier than snowmobilers can ride dirt or
pavement and ruin a $7000 led, because it can't be carried. Yes, we have trailers, RVs,
etc. but if skiers skied on slopes and other areas away from snowmobilers we could all get
along. Folks need to take up as small a space as can be when parking. Not two spaces etc.
Snowmobiles do pollute skiers & packers just get in the way because they seem to
feel they own the trails. The trails are for all but snowmobilers buy registrations for
grooming of the trails and etc. Do you!!
Extremely inadequate parking. Don't blame people for parking on the road - spend some
registration fees on parking areas
Need better parking - Wald Track is always full on 3-day weekends
Mountain Home parking is not used to its full extent
Need better parking at Albany parking lot
Need better parking near the trail head above Centennial
Don't know about the money
The access for non-motorized users is not safe and not acceptable. A family with dog
etc. is a hazard to the snowmobilers and the experience is not fun. The parking &
access problems alone have chased us out of the Snowies.
Too may users at trailheads, especially Green Rock; need to have capacity limits and
encourage users to go elsewhere.
The lack of well develop parking has been one of the reasons for conflicts. The forest
service has been obstructive
Certain members of the forest service staff promote one form of recreation over another
Need more parking lots with the more usage! WYDOT needs to be more visual on roads!
Every time I have come to Snowy Range I have always found a parking spot. I feel there
is no issue here.
Need parking lot at trail head above Centennial Wyo
It sucks! But tolerable. Litter is a problem with out of staters. SLED TIL YUR DEAD
We need more parking areas. The area is big enough for all of us people but we need more
parking
This is the only problem area. Parking can be fixed easily. Have a [sic] access
trail next to the road
Improper use of current parking (RV takes 5 spots, overnight parking, users not being
considerate)
Parking on sides of highway causes safety problems.
Some lots are too small, poorly designed/signed or under-used
No place for "Single" vehicle
I am a cross country/backcountry skier and I enjoy using trails in the Snowies. I have
had experiences with motorized recreation users who had good manners and quite a few that
did not. I am concerned that more areas are being opened up for motorized recreation, when
there are many areas that have viable recreation that are under-utilized. I am also
concerned that we are not able to support the current infrastructure properly, but are
building more roads/trails to be maintained. The building of these roads/trails is
fragmenting sensitive habitat; these resources are enjoyed by everyone as they recreate -
we should not destroy them - but leave them for the enjoyment of future generations.
