Who We Are

Institute Staff

The William D. Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources represents a partnership among research Faculty in related disciplines, a prominent Institute Board of leaders in the field of environment and natural resources, and the aspirations of a land-grant university.

Mission

The Institute's mission is to advance effective decision-making on environmental and natural resource issues through research, policy analysis, education, process support, and proactive outreach.

The Institute accomplishes its mission by partnering and coordinating with University of Wyoming faculty and students, and with government agencies, business, non-governmental organizations, communities, elected officials, and other citizens.

Values

We believe that effective decision-making affecting the environment and natural resources should be driven by:

  1. Full participation: Involvement of all parties who have an interested in the issue being addressed;
  2. Accurate information: Use of the best available scientific and policy-relevant information;
  3. Balance: Understanding the interrelationships among the environment, economy, and communities;
  4. Fair process: A fair and equitable deliberative and decision-making process;
  5. Inclusive decisions: A commitment to formulate decisions that address the interests of diverse stakeholders; and
  6. Effective implementation:  Efficient and effective implementation of decisions.

Guidance of the Institute is the responsibility of an international Board, composed of leaders from business, industry, environmental organizations, education and government. Board members are selected to represent diverse perspectives. The Board meets twice yearly to identify new research directions and to explore innovative solutions to environmental and natural resource problems.

Private Support

The Institute relies upon the generosity of a growing number of foundations, corporations, individuals; and agencies that share the Institute's goals and objectives. Institute support can be designated for annual operations, establishment of an Institute endowment fund, or for specific Institute research and policy projects. Private support is vital to the William D. Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and Natural Resources. The Institute gratefully acknowledges the donors and volunteers who help make the Institute vision a reality.
