CURRENT RESEARCH

Overall goal: Development of entomopathogenic fungi to control grasshoppers in Brazil.

  1. Develop and optimize a system to produce and formulate a bioinsecticide based on the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (= Metarhizium flavoviride) against the grasshopper Rhammatocerus schistocercoides.
  2. Field testing the efficacy of the bioinsecticide.
  3. Introduce gene markers to identify the isolates used.
  4. Integrate the use of bioinsecticide and sublethal dosis of chemical insecticides used to control grasshoppers.
  5. Examine the effects of fungal infection on food intake by grasshoppers.
