Ebony Grasshopper

Boopedon nubilum (Say)

Boopedon nubilum occurs in localized populations in the Black Hills and the Big Horn Basin, where it prefers areas of mixedgrass prairie. The males are black and the females are usually brown and flightless. Eggs overwinter in the soil. Adults are present from late July to September. It feeds on grasses and is known to eat blue grama grass but it is rarely numerous enough to cause any damage to the rangelands.
