Melanoplus

Note: Genus Melanoplus is by far the largest genus of grasshoppers in New Mexico. Identification in most cases involves characteristics found only in adult males. Primarily the shape of the male cerci and various structures associated with the male genital plate are useful in this regard. Several species are very important pests of rangeland or crops. Some, however, are relatively specialized and unimportant.
