Redlegged Grasshopper

Melanoplus femurrubrum (DeGeer)

Melanoplus femurrubrum, the redlegged grasshopper, is a common species in cultivated fields, roadsides, vacant lots, and river flood plains in Wyoming. An unusual "blue form" has been found at several locations on rangelands in the state. Eggs overwinter in the soil and hatch in June. Adults are present from late July to October. This species feeds on many species of forbs and grasses. Although it is not a pest on rangeland it can be a serious pest of crops, including alfalfa, corn, beets, and beans.
