Common name: GRAY BIRD LOCUST.

Size: 40-70 mm.

General distribution: California to Texas, S. to Nicaragua.

Distribution in New Mexico: Bernalillo, Chaves, Dona Ana, Eddy, Hidalgo, Otero, Sierra, Socorro, Valencia.

Habitat: Usually lower elevations, among shrubs in desert or riparian areas; occasionally in mountains in similar habitats.

Host: Forbs, crops.

Adults Present: August-November.

Notes: Very large bird grasshopper; color gray or brown, with some spots; hind tibiae brown to black. Destructive to cotton and alfalfa.
