Schistocerca obscura (Fabricius)

Common name: OBSCURE BIRD GRASSHOPPER.

Size: 23-50 mm.

General distribution: Maryland to Florida, W. and S. to New Mexico and Mexico.

Distribution in New Mexico: Otero.

Habitat: Unknown in New Mexico; found in disturbed, sunny, weedy areas in southern Mississippi.

Host: Unknown.

Adults Present: ?

Notes: Large bird grasshopper; dark olive-green to purplish, sometimes with dorsal stripe; color uniform or may be faintly spotted; hind tibiae black-purple. Not economically important.
