Common name: GREAT CRESTED GRASSHOPPER.

Size: 35-50 mm.

General distribution: Wyoming, S. through Arizona, New Mexico and W. Texas into Mexico.

Distribution in New Mexico: Bernalillo, Catron, Chaves, Colfax, Curry, De Baca, Dona Ana, Eddy, Grant, Guadalupe, Hidalgo, Lea, Lincoln, Otero, Quay, Sandoval, San Miguel, Sierra, Socorro, Torrance, Union, Valencia.

Habitat: Grassland, desert grassland.

Host: Malvaceae, mostly Sphaeralcea.

Adults Present: June-October.
 
Notes: The green color, high pronotal crest with serrations, and orange hind wings easily distinguish this species from any other New Mexico grasshopper. Often with yellow-ringed brown spots. Hind tibiae pale. Not economically important.
