Dactylotum bicolor Charpentier

Dactylotum bicolor, the pictured grasshopper, is an uncommon species that occurs in sparse, weedy rangeland of eastern Wyoming. Most of our records come from the lower Platte River Valley. Adults prefer loamy of fine sandy soil for egg laying. Eggs overwinter in the soil. Adults are present in late July and August. It is known to feed on forbs such as globemallow and scurf pea. Because it is never abundant, beneficial effects of weed feeding are limited.
