Redshanked Grasshopper

Xanthippus corallipes (Haldeman)

Xanthippus corallipes, the redshanked grasshopper, is found throughout Wyoming in all grassland habitats from dry, low-elevation prairies to alpine meadows. It would appear commonly in this survey if more collecting were done in the spring and early summer. Eggs and nymphs can overwinter. At lower elevations adults are most common in May or June. At higher elevations adults are present through August. It feeds on grasses, but rarely do populations expand and cause economic damage to rangelands.
