Deaf and Hard of Hearing Internship 2019

Wyoming EPSCoR office is hosting its second annual undergraduate summer internship!

We are recruiting two students for the summer of 2019 to join UW's Stable Isotope Facility to gain a hands-on research experience. Our internship provides a meaningful research experience, gaining knowledge of:

  • PCR and DNA Extraction
  • Quantitative Chemical Analysis Techniques
  • Strong Computer Skills and Experience with Program R
  • Comfortable with Learning and using Open Source Software for Advanced Data Analysis
Project Description:

Predicting the ecological consequences of microbes in natural and disturbed settings is a grand challenge for microbial ecology. To date, this challenge has been addressed only in case studies or in simple systems with low taxonomic diversity. Characterizing the relationship among microbial genes, traits, and functions will improve predictive understanding of biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem services, and involves significant opportunities for economic development. Determining microbial consequences requires ambitious sampling of genomic and environmental data, followed by analyses of this information through cutting-edge data science.

For this project, we aim to assess microbial communities along an elevational gradient within the Laramie River and some of its tributaries. Students will conduct the entire experiment, beginning with the acquisition of samples from the field, conduct DNA extraction for genomic sequencing and use Liquid Chromatography (LC) in conjunction with tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) to infer the identity of thousands of proteins and/or metabolites. This project provides an exciting and challenging mix of experimental, laboratory and computational techniques.
