KJ Reddy
Professor of Ecosystem Science and Management

KJ Reddy (Katta Jayaram Reddy)

Professor of Ecosystem Science and Management

Area(s) of expertise:

  • Geochemistry of Water
  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Water Quality

Geochemistry of Water, Environmental Chemistry, Water Quality: During his tenure at UW, Reddy has developed a distinguished research, teaching and advising, and outreach service programs focused on land use activities (e.g., Ag production, energy production, mineral extraction, and solid waste disposal) and the environment (water, air, and soils). His research programs have spread beyond the scientific community to be featured in a variety of high visibility news and print media from local to global levels. Some of his high-profile research topics includes removal of toxic arsenic species from groundwater, mineralization of industrial flue gas components, and geochemistry of produced water generated from energy resource extraction and energy production processes.

Professor Reddy received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from India. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Quality in 1986 from Colorado State University. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow from 1986-1990 at Department of Geology and Geophysics, UW. He worked as a research scientist at UW Water Research Center from 1990-2000. In 2000 Dr. Reddy joined the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2005. From 2000-2010 he served as director for UW campus-wide Water Resources Interdisciplinary Graduate Degree Program. He also served as Deputy Director of Academics for UW School of Energy Resources from 2008-2010. Professor Reddy was a visiting research scholar at Harvard University from January 2014 to August 2015.

Professor Reddy teaches Watershed Water Quality courses. He mentored thirty-five graduate students (28 M.S. and 7 Ph.D. students). He served as a graduate student committee member for fifty-six students (44 M.S. and 12 Ph.D. students) from four different colleges on campus. Reddy employed ten full-time postdoctoral fellows and six research scientists. In addition, he provided research training to more than fifty undergraduate students in his Water Quality Labs. Many of them in government positions in federal and state agencies and some of them are in academia and industry.

Dr. Reddy’s research group published over fifty refereed journal articles. In addition, some of his group’s publications include several invited book chapters, conference proceedings and abstracts and ten patents. He edited an invited book on coalbed methane produced water. He has given numerous invited presentations at water, energy, and environmental conferences held in nineteen countries. Dr. Reddy was a member of different national and international energy and environmental committees. Dr. Reddy’s interdisciplinary research approaches have attracted more than twenty nine million in funding (as PI and Co-PI) from a variety of state, federal, and industry sources. Professor Reddy’s graduate students were recognized with UW’s outstanding thesis and James Warner American Water Works Association Awards for their research and publication track record. Some of Professor Reddy’s honors and awards include George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty, John P. Ellbogen Distinguished Teacher, Agriculture Experiment Station Outstanding Researcher, Andrew Vanvig Lifetime Distinguished Faculty, and ENI Europe Energy and Environment Award nominee, Rome, Italy.
