Earth System Science

Earth System Science is an interdisciplinary degree program that integrates various fields of academic study to understand the Earth as a system. A Bachelor of Science degree in Earth System Science (ESS) will provide an integrated approach to pressing issues of global environmental change. Courses offered in the program examine interactions among components of the Earth system, including the anthrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.

Each student majoring in ESS will declare a concentration in one of the following areas:
  • Anthropology
  • Biology
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • Geophysics
  • Soil Science
  • Secondary Education

Students who plan to pursue a concentration in Soil Science will do so through the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. Soil Science is an integrated concentration that unifies interactions among the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. An ESS degree with a concentration in Soil Science enhances educational opportunities for students by offering unique learning experiences because of UW's location, resources and faculty.

Members of the Ecosystem Science & Management department that have teaching and research programs involving Earth Systems Science are:
  • Scott Miller, Assistant Professor, Ecological Modeling
  • Larry Munn, Professor, Soil Genesis, Morphology and Classification
  • Ginger Paige, Assistant Professor, Hydrology
  • Katta J. Reddy, Professor, Water Quality/Chemistry
  • Peter Stahl, Associate Professor, Environmental Soil Microbiology and Restoration Ecology
  • Thomas Thurow, Professor, Hydrology/Forest and Range Management
  • David Williams, Associate Professor, Stable Isotopes
  • Stephen Williams, Professor, Soil Microbiology
