UW Vocal Jazz Workshop

Dear Vocal Music Educator,

Once again, the UW Vocal and Jazz faculties are combining forces for the Vocal Jazz Workshop specifically for students interested in vocal jazz.  This workshop will focus on building skills and providing a range of experiences in many areas of vocal jazz.  

We have two featured artists this year:  Jazz Educator FRANK DEMIERO from Washington and Jazz singing sensation JANE MONHEIT.   Frank conducts and manages the Seattle Jazz Singers, one of the most exciting professional jazz choirs in the country today and is the co-founder of Sound Music Publications, a publishing company that offers the best in all areas of contemporary choral literature, recordings, and choral clinics.  Frank will be working with the workshop participants.

Jane Monheit is a passionate interpreter of jazz songs and an accomplished recording artist.  Her tour is featuring her new album, "Home."  Her concert on Sunday, October 16 is included in the registration for all participants!

Each school has the opportunity to sign up for a clinic on Sunday afternoon from 3-5pm with Frank DeMiero.  Monday's evening concert will highlight our student male a cappella group, "The Happy Jacks" and the UW Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Ben Markley.  In addition, your students will have a one-on-one vocal jazz coaching or master class with some of the most talented vocal jazz singers and faculty at UW.

Please note that this one day workshop does NOT take the place of the Rocky Mountain Festival of Voices which will be February 23-25, 2012 and that the workshop is designed to encourage and enlighten those students who are specifically interested in learning more about vocal jazz.

• Workshops with jazz music educator Frank DeMiero
• Interest sessions with UW faculty on: improvisation, the language of jazz, performance technique, and solo singing with a combo
• Small group mentorship and master classes with talented UW Vocal Jazz students
• Performance by UW student a cappella groups and the UW Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ben Markley
• Jane Monheit in concert

The cost, including lunch and dinner on Monday, and one ticket to the JANE MONHEIT concert is $35 per student (One (1) JANE MONHEIT concert ticket will be allotted to a chaperone/teacher from each school).  Attendees are responsible for their own lodging.
