Textiles and Merchandising

Textiles and merchandising is a diverse and competitive field in which individuals plan, provide, and promote apparel, furnishings and related goods desired by the consumer. A specialization in merchandising offers knowledge of business principles within the fashion and interior industries; entry into the world or retailing, manufacturing, and design; involvement in marketing apparel and residential and commercial furnishings; and study and observation in all facets of fashion and interior organizations. The textiles and merchandising program also offer a minor in Interior Design, as well as a minor in Apparel Design.

The textiles and merchandising program is an interdisciplinary curriculum providing a flexible, broad program to accommodate a variety of careers and interests. Special emphasis is placed on preparation for management or ownership of small retail businesses in Wyoming and rural areas of the West. The student in textiles and merchandising has access to modern laboratories for textile testing, fashion and interior design, and apparel construction.

Students who enjoy working with fabrics, clothing, or home furnishings and are interested in color, design, and business should choose textiles and merchandising as a course of study.  It is a diverse and competitive field in which individuals plan, provide, and promote apparel, furnishings, and related goods desired by consumers.  This option offers knowledge of business principles within the fashion and interior design industries.  Students who are especially interested in home furnishings might consider an interior design minor.  Those who are especially interested in fashion design and illustration might consider the apparel design minor.

Courses

Courses in textiles, design, apparel, interiors, and consumer studies are required. The Textiles & Merchandising course work also includes studies in marketing, management, computers, art, and advertising. In addition to theoretical study, practical on-the-job training is encouraged through real-world projects with clients. Courses in art, fashion, textiles, apparel design, interiors, and consumer studies are also required. In addition to theoretical study, practical on-the-job study is encouraged with opportunities for internships and field experiences. Study tours to major markets are offered on a regular basis.
