Freshman Interest Groups

Majors of Interest:

Students with interest in political science, international studies, languages, and health science all benefit from this FIG.

FIG Description:

What judgments do we hold about food, language and culinary customs?  This course introduces culture and language surrounding global cuisines. You will critically evaluate differences, how they developed, and how they are reflected in popular culture, relate them to your own experiences and discuss them with an international conversation partner. This course is a service learning course which combines community service with academic instruction. Service in this course consists of meeting with an international student for eight hours during the semester and journaling about your experience.

Sponsored by a librarian, you will explore how food, culture, and language blend to influence a society’s relationship to knowledge and information. You will discover your ability to fight misinformation through knowledge of state and national government. By being internationally and culturally aware, and by knowing your civic rights and responsibilities, you will be on your way to being an information expert!
