About Fraternity and Sorority Life

Leadership, Scholarship, Service and Friendship

What does it mean to become a part of something larger than yourself? Members of the Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) community would sum it up into four words: leadership, scholarship, service and friendship. Though it may seem like it, these aren’t just words; they are a commitment. It is a commitment to values that fraternity men and sorority women still hold themselves to each and every day.

Their ambition to take part in their student agency is demonstrated through involvement, not exclusively within their respective chapters, but through student organizations as well. Aside from honorary societies such as Iron Skull, Cardinal Key, and Mortar Board, over 30% of senators in ASUW for the 2015-2016 academic year are fraternity and sorority members. FSL members are also exceedingly present in athletics, club sports, ROTC, and countless other RSOs that help the college campus thrive.

Moreover, their dedication to scholarship is exemplified by their maintenance of academic excellence. The average community GPA continues to be higher than the all men’s and women’s undergraduate averages. Additionally, each chapter offers financial scholarships to their members based on academic merit and promotes the development of relationships with faculty by hosting dinners and events in their honor. Within fraternity and sorority chapters, academic mentorship and guidance is available through volunteer advisors and alumni, in addition to peer members.

Fraternity & Sorority Life members are also committed to giving back to their community, at both the local and national level. Within the last academic year, the entire FSL community completed over 5,000 hours of community service and acquired approximately $1,900 to Coe Library for aide against the damages to their book collection from winter break. Altogether, the University of Wyoming’s FSL community raised over $53,000 for their philanthropic causes and some chapters were nationally recognized for their contributions.

Leadership, scholarship and service thrive on a foundation of camaraderie, and foster a greater sense of friendship than one might initially presume. FSL members could not accomplish their goals without the support from one other. Reciprocally, a deeper bond of friendship develops from the application of these values. Surrounding oneself by people with a common moral code not only produces a well-rounded individual, but also offers an opportunity to be held at a higher standard, to hold others to that same standard, and, consequentially, to grow together.

When asked, “What does it mean to be a part of something larger than yourself?” A fraternity man or a sorority woman would sum it up in as little as four values. On the contrary, these few values are the foundation of thousands within the FSL community. These values are a lifelong standard for many. That’s the enormity of joining a fraternity or a sorority.
