STEP 1102

Help First Year Students Step into College

STEP 1102 is designed to help freshmen interact with the UW campus resources, staff, and faculty; learn about tools for academic support and wellness; explore academic and co-curricular opportunities; incorporate personal talents and passions into major and career selection; and encourage personal reflection of the many new experiences encountered as a new student on campus. This class is intended to increase success and engagement at UW as well as improve critical thinking, purposeful reading, and democratic discussion with peers and faculty.

Fall 2019 Details:

Starting Fall 2019, this optional one-credit course has the potential to greatly benefit both students and the faculty and professional staff who teach it. Techniques that instructors incorporate in the course contribute to student success and retention; teaching an FYE provides instructors the opportunity to be part of a learning community that offers valuable teaching strategies and reflection.

We are currently looking to add sections of STEP 1102 for Fall 2019. The course will meet once per week for 50 minutes. There are thematic focuses each week with short readings, written reflection, and out-of-class assignments.

FYE: The missing Piece of the Puzzle

The 2015 USP requirement of the First Year Seminar addressed some of the skills freshmen need to succeed including critical thinking, research, and communication skills. However, many first year students have expressed the need for more college transition skills. The First Year Experience course, STEP 1102, is set up as the missing piece of the puzzle, incorporating skills and techniques designed to help students succeed in academia, including:

  1. Academic Skills Content (Learning about Learning)

  2. Campus Engagement Activities (the Cowboy Experience)

  3. Personal Growth and Wellness Content
