STEP 1102

Help First Year Students Step into College

What is STEP 1102?

STEP 1102 is designed to help freshmen interact with UW campus resources, staff, and faculty; to learn about tools for academic support and wellness; to explore academic and co-curricular opportunities; to incorporate personal talents and passions into major and career selection; and to encourage personal reflection of the many new experiences encountered as a new student on campus. This class is intended to increase success and engagement at UW as well as to improve critical thinking, purposeful reading, and democratic discussion with peers and faculty.

Fall 2019 Details:

This optional, one-credit course, which will begin in the Fall 2019 semester, will greatly benefit not only students who take it, but the faculty and professional staff who teach it. Techniques that the instructors incorporate into the course will contribute to student success and retention. FYE instructors will have the opportunity to be a part of a learning community that collaborately shares teaching strategies and instructional reflection.

We are currently looking to add sections of STEP 1102 for Fall 2019. The course will meet twice per week for 50 minutes and end before Thanksgiving. The curriculum will incorporate thematic emphases each week that include short readings, written reflection, and out-of-class assignments. Depending on each instructor's experience, a one-credit course will require anywhere between two and four hours of preparation
