The Rising: Remembering Women of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising

Elizabeth Holder

Elizabeth Holder, University of Wyoming

Publication Date: Summer 2015

Research Question
What specific roles did women play in Ireland’s Easter Rising of 1916?

These accounts will shed light on several larger social issues before the conflict, such as gender, class, and religious affiliation of the women who participated.

Methods Used
Archival research, including looking at pension records, personal accounts, and witness statements.

The research is designed to fall between feminist Irish history and mainstream Irish history to bring about a new understanding of the sacrifices both men and women made in Ireland's fight for freedom.
