Particle Kinematics in Statistically Uniform Dune FieldsĀ

Thomas Ashley

Thomas Ashley, University of Wyoming

Publication Date: 2018
Location: Wageningen, Netherlands
Team: Myself and researchers at Wageningen University, Netherlands

Project Goal
What controls the stable scales of dune topography? How can preserved sand dunes be used to learn about earth’s history?

Significance
Important for management of modern rivers and reconstruction of river characteristics in geologic time

Methods Used
Track particle motions and collect topographic scans of dune topography in a recirculating laboratory flume.

Conclusions/Outcomes
Demonstrate the hypothesized connection between particle transport distances and dune length scales.
