“Seeds of Possibility" - A Children's Book

 Ashley Hope Carlisle

Ashley Hope Carlisle, University of Wyoming

Publication Date: 2018
Department: Visual & Literary Arts
Location: London, England
Team: Individual Research at the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens & Millennium Seed Bank

Project Goal
The goal of my project is to gather visual information from the world seed collection at the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens in London and Sussex so that I may use this information to create a children’s book on global human dispersal.

Significance
Human migration is happening more and more around the world due to political extremists, natural disasters, and war. With this book, I aim to create some peace and understanding in linking acts of nature, specifically seed dispersal, to these global happenings.

Methods Used
While at the Kew, I will draw/sketch from seeds collected from Syria, Africa, Australia, England, and other locations where humans have been asked to move from their homes. I have started the text for the book, but will work on the imagery based off of this research in London.

Conclusions/Outcomes
The major outcome for this trip is a children’s book that will metaphorically bring plant life and the human endeavor to survive together in drawing form to offer some comfort and understanding when either a conversation occurs regarding global current events, or when the child is experiencing a move or transition in their life.
