BID - A formal invitation to membership in a Greek-letter organization.

CHAPTER - A chartered undergraduate or alumni group recognized by a fraternity or sorority.

FRATERNITY - The name which applies to all Greek letter organizations that are characterized by rituals, a badge, and a strong tie of friendship among members. The term usually typifies organizations for men.

INITIATION - The ceremony in which a pledged or new member becomes an active, initiated member of the fraternity or sorority.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC) - A representative governing body of all fraternities. IFC is designed as a resource for all fraternites on campus, and serves to strenthen the fraternity system through interfraternity cooperation.

LEGACY - An individual who has a family member that belongs to the fraternity or sorority he or she is pledging.

PANHELLENIC COUNCIL (PANHEL) - The central governing body found on all campuses that have nationally recognized women's Greek chapters (Sororities).

PHILANTHROPY - Community service efforts to improve the well being of the community and campus through charitable actions.

PLEDGE / NEW MEMBER - The title given to a man or woman from the time he or she accepts a bid to affiliate with a Greek chapter until the time he or she is initiated into that chapter.

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER - A non Sorority or fraternity member who is attending recruitment sessions as a registered guest and has fulfilled all eligibility requirements.

RECRUITMENT - A mutual selection process through which potential new members and fraternity and sorority members get to know each other.

SORORITY - A Greek letter organization for women; also known as a women's fraternity.
