WHY GREEK EXCELLENCE AWAITS YOU

WHAT WILL THE CHAPTERS BE LOOKING FOR WHEN THEY LOOK AT ME?

The long-standing tradition of excellence and opportunity is supported within the Greek Community through the selection of QUALITY individuals. Though this listing of possible items is not all inclusive, each of these points can set you apart from other students, and present you a greater opportunity for becoming a Greek.

• RESPECT - Many chapters look to an individual's actions to determine whether or not they will be respectful to members, ideas, and guests. Mistreatment of ladies / gentlemen, abrasive conduct, and closed-mindedness will likely hurt your chances.
   
• SCHOLASTIC ABILITY - Though many chapters don't expect perfection academically, all want to see that you can maximize your potential and be successful during your tenure at UW. Some chapters have specific GPA criteria that they use to select potential members, and you should include these benchmarks in your decision process. Lack of focus, ambition, or potential for academic growth will all discourage chapters from selecting you. However, a 2.5 or lower GPA does not necessarily mean that you can't find a home in the Greek Community.
   
• PHILANTHROPIC INTEREST - All chapters at the University of Wyoming are active in philanthropic activities. Therefore, the chapters will like to see that you have interest in participating in these opportunities. Complete lack of interest in helping others outside of the organization will reduce your chances for membership.
   
• LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL - Since all of the chapters at UW have leadership positions available inside their houses, and many strongly encourage their members to find other sources of leadership opportunity on campus, the potential to be a leader is a crucial element. They don't expect you to be a future President of the United States (though that may seal the deal for you if you are), but they do expect you to be able to work well with others, communicate your ideas effectively, and be able to manage tasks that are thrown your way. Like respect, a brash demeanor, or other factor not consistent with leadership potential could hurt you here.
   
• SOCIAL APTITUDE - All of the chapters on campus are drawn to individuals that will bring a unique and interesting personal touch to their organizations. Sense of humor, ability to communicate well with others, and interest in meeting and developing new friends are all qualities of individuals who will meet the expectations of chapters at UW. In essence, you will need to be able to make and maintain friends within and outside of the chapter to be successful.
   
• OTHER QUALITIES - Other qualities looked for specifically by chapters, are more chapter specific in nature. Athletic ability, being good with numbers, strong moral / ethical qualities, etc. will help you. Overall, anything else that you could offer the chapters at UW that would help them better meet their responsibilities, and further diversify their membership will be an asset to you. Ask yourself, "what do I do that makes me different / what will I bring to the table?" The answer to this question will usually help you along the way.
   
• CONTACT - A chapter can't be interested in you if they don't know you exist. And as daunting as this is to many students, you will likely have to take the first step. Whether you get involved in Recruitment, sign up for a visit at a Fraternity / Sorority's informational table in the Union or at Discovery Days, or simply stop by to say hello, you will need to meet the members for them to consider you for membership. Since so many things qualify and disqualify individuals from being potential members, most houses require a 100% chapter vote of confidence to offer an invitation for membership / bid, so, the more people you've met inside the organization you want to be a part of, the better.

As mentioned, though this list is just a summary of things that could be of interest to members of the Fraternities and Sororities you want to join, it is not complete. To truly understand all of the things people want from you before you join, you will need to take the step, and visit chapters.
