Sanctions Mandated for UW Fraternity

Printable Article Email this Article

Sept. 24, 2003 -- The University of Wyoming has implemented social and conduct probationary status on Sigma Nu fraternity in the wake of alcohol-related violations this semester.

The social probations, as outlined by the UW Dean of Students office, mean the chapter will not be able to serve alcohol at any hosted or sponsored events, either on or off campus, during fall semester, including Homecoming. Sigma Nu will be on conduct probation from now until the remainder of the current academic year.

Sigma Nu will be required to take a leadership role in disseminating accurate information about the Interfraternity Council's "Social Responsibility Guidelines" as applicable to fraternities and sororities on campus. Sigma Nu will be required to hold an educational program on the guidelines this semester, with mandatory attendance by all chapter members. Chapter members also will be required to participate in a Greek community service project.

Other requirements to complete the conduct probationary status include a letter of support from the fraternity's national headquarters, a thorough review of the sanctions with the Interfraternity Council, and a letter detailing the status of all sanctions to be submitted to the dean of students, who will decide about reinstating social privileges.

"My expectation is that you will provide appropriate and mature leadership to continue your chapter's long and distinguished history at UW," wrote Dolores S. Cardona, interim dean of students, in a letter to Sigma Nu. ". . . we know that the responsibility for 'excelling with honor' lies with you and your members."
