Student Farmers Promote Sustainability at UW

Student farmers

Ada Harris and Alanna Elder need to fix Sally, their tractor. Repairs will cost about $1,300, and have to happen soon so interns at the ACRES Student Farm can spread compost and plant vegetables in time for the summer farmers’ markets. Ada, of Portland, Oregon (left), is vice president and Alanna, of Laramie, Wyoming (right), is secretary of the University of Wyoming student organization that operates the farm. Both are juniors studying agroecology with minors in sustainability from the Haub School. Ada has a second minor in horticulture and Alanna is double majoring in environment and natural resources. She recently won an honorable mention for the prestigious national Udall Scholarship recognizing her environmental focus.

Under Ada and Alanna’s leadership, the ACRES Student Farm promotes sustainability at UW and throughout the Laramie community in many ways: by selling produce shares, running a booth at the downtown farmers’ market, collecting compost from businesses and community members around town, sponsoring paid summer student internships, hosting agricultural research projects, and more.

The two just launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Sally’s repairs. Help this inspiring student-led community effort by supporting the campaign. You can also volunteer at the farm any Saturday from 10-2. Email Ada and Alanna at if you plan to volunteer.
