BS in Environmental Systems Science (ESS)

BS in Environmental Systems Science (ESS)

The BS in ESS is for students seeking an introduction to the physical, biological, and human components of the Earth system through data collection, statistical analysis, information technology, and modeling.

This is an interdisciplinary environmental science degree focusing on the scientific methods, content, and tools you’ll need to succeed in an interconnected world.

A BS in ESS from the Haub School emphasizes development of essential skills:

        • Interdisciplinary and integrative thinking

        • Designing, conducting, and interpreting scientific investigations

        • Applying systems concepts to environmental problems

        • Using technological tools to examine spatial and temporal patterns

You’ll take 23 credits of foundational courses in system science, biological science, earth science, and physical science. You’ll also take 15 credits of “spheres” courses—anthrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere—and 12 credits of skills and tools. You are also required to choose a minor as an area of focus.
