USFS Research Permitting

Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Thunder Basin National Grassland, Research Permitting

The Ruckelshaus Institute at the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources serves as the liaison between the University of Wyoming (UW) and US Forest Service (USFS) for all university-affiliated research activities taking place on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland.

Twice per year (typically in April and October), the Ruckelshaus Institute prepares and submits on behalf of UW an institutional operating plan to USFS that contains research permit applications for all university-affiliated research and class projects taking place on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland. Any and all research activities by university researchers on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland, as well as class field trips, must be included and approved as part of the institutional operating plan.

To be included in the institutional operating plan, investigators must provide information requested in the research permit application template. Research activities are approved or declined by USFS on a by-project basis.

The permit schedule for activities taking place on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland is as follows:

  • Summer/Fall (May through October) – call for permit applications announced in February
  • Winter/Spring (November through April) – call for permit applications announced in September

Investigators with approved projects are required to carry a copy of the signed University Operating Plan and the Standard Operating Guidelines with them into the field.

For more information contact Kit Freedman (cfreedma@uwyo.edu) at the Ruckelshaus Institute (766-5146) or Farrell Rapp (fgraf@uwyo.edu) at the UW Research Office (766-5320).
