Honorary Degree

Barry Douglas, Doctor of Music (Mus. D.)

Considered one of the most versatile and brilliant pianists of our time, the artistry of Barry Douglas is acclaimed by critics and audiences worldwide. Born in Belfast, Ireland, Douglas has mastered the many dimensions of his career - performer, conductor, recording specialist, and teacher. In 1986, he became a superstar in the world of music when he won the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, perhaps the most competitive and prestigious music competition in the world. He has been honored with the Order of the British Empire, been appointed the Prince Consort Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music, and has received critical acclaim from every corner of the world. Today, he commands venues with princes and kings. And yet, Douglas is no stranger to Wyoming. He first performed at the University of Wyoming in the late eighties, and he has returned many times since, either alone or with his orchestra, Camerata Ireland, to provide accessible concert opportunities acrosthe state and the Rocky Mountain region. Performing in high school auditoriums and small community theaters rather than great concert halls, Douglas has brought to life the most enduring treasures of our classical tradition for audiences who rarely have such an opportunity.

For all of your contributions, Barry Douglas, we are honored to bestow upon you the degree of Doctor of Music (Mus.D.) honoris causa.
