We live in a global community; recognizing this and being part of that community are fundamental first steps to full engagement. Course Description:
Some bad news: life is stressful, unpredictable, and full of pain and suffering. It's
true now and it was true in the 5th Century BCE when the Buddha lived. Some good news:
the Buddha claimed to have discovered a path by which people could escape this pervasive
suffering. In the process, he planted the seeds for a religious tradition that has
been influential across Asia and, more recently, the modern West. In this course,
we will explore the diverse ideals, practices, and traditions of Buddhism while exploring
the ways Buddhism is lived and practiced in Thailand. We will explore key ideas from
the Buddhist tradition about impermanence, desire, and the nature of the self, and
ask how these ideas were taken up and reimagined as Buddhism developed. Learn more

Course Description:
The Center for International Experiential Learning (CIEL) is an award-winning provider of educational travel that for over a decade has provided students with the opportunity to learn first-hand about conflict-affected regions through immersive on-the-ground experiential learning guided by internationally recognized scholars and local experts that is combined with a carefully designed and rigorous program of pre-travel education.
Participants from the University of Wyoming and other US universities will travel to Vietnam and Cambodia, delving into the history of the Vietnam War and how it has shaped the country (as well as contemporary US-Vietnam relations) as well as exploring regional legacies of colonialism, the Vietnam/Cambodia war, and the Cambodian Genocide. This experiential learning program will take students through vibrant cityscapes and tranquil rural terrains, from the historic downtown of Hanoi to the temples of Angkor Wat and the metropolitan areas of Phnom Penh and Saigon. They will engage with historians, local leaders, NGOs, and academic experts, as well as individuals directly impacted by past and current conflicts. Together, they will explore the diverse narratives and personal stories that illuminate regional identity, history, ongoing processes of post-conflict development and reconciliation, and the impact of post-traumatic stress on internal and external relations in these dynamically evolving nations.

This class explores Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Malaysian history and culture. In three weeks in Singapore and Malaysia, you will engage in a wide range of cultural learning and interactive activities. You will see diverse ethnicities, religions (Buddhist, Muslim, Christian), food and architecture; visit museums and local farming villages; work with a charity organization to help individuals with disabilities; join pewter dish workshop and take home your own masterpiece; visit the Singapore Zoo and the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary; meeting with faculty and students from local universities; enjoy magic light shows; explore night market, relax on the beach and more! Course Description:
Shakespeare in England and Italy will give you a great introduction to the plays of
William Shakespeare as texts and ongoing cultural milestones. The class also introduces
you to the plays in performance – we attend seven or eight performances at major theatres
like the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Globe as well as smaller and regional venues
to explore the myriad ways that contemporary artists bring Shakespeare’s plays to
vibrant life. Finally, the course exposes you to amazing places in England and Italy,
especially the great cities where we will stay and the social and artistic institutions
that characterize them. Shakespeare set plays in Italian cities as a way of investigating
cultural difference. There is a wonderful synergy between our own experience as visitors
to England and Italy and Shakespeare’s own repeated exploration of cultural encounters
across difference.

This course will be led in partnership with the Center for International Experiential

other top-tier universities across the US to receive direct exposure to the people,
politics and realities of the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process as a way
to learn about real-world successes and failures in conflict resolution and peacebuilding
and to develop the critical ability to compare and contrast these vital lessons learned
with the experiences of other conflict-affected regions.As a unique part of their
educational travel, students will actively engage with politicians, community leaders,
non-governmental organizations, faith leaders, academic experts and victims/survivors
from all sides impacted by the conflict to hear a comprehensive view of the divergent
perspectives, narratives and human stories of people navigating an ongoing peace process.
Students will also gain invaluable experience of the lived realities of people living
in a deeply divided post-conflict society by crossing physical, psychological and
cultural borders as they transit between the difficult and contested geographies of
the cities of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry as well as Northern Ireland and the Republic
of Ireland. They will also be empowered with the knowledge and transferable skills
needed to emerge as leaders in addressing issues of division and polarization surrounding
complex global problems and in their own local contexts.

Course Description:
In February of 1964, four mop-topped lads from Liverpool touched down at JFK Airport in New York City to the delight of thousands of screaming fans (most of them young and female). A few nights later, they played The Ed Sullivan Show and, through the miracle of television, entered the living rooms of millions of American homes. In a matter of hours, John, Paul, George, and Ringo -- collectively known as the Beatles – became household names. The British Invasion had begun! Following in their footsteps came such renowned bands as The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Queen, and Radiohead – just to name a few.
In “Rock and Roll Tourism: The Beatles and Beyond,” we’ll turn the tables and invade Britain! As we do so, we’ll pose the question: What cultural, economic, political, and promotional forces combined to make this moment possible? And why do people still care today? To answer these questions, we’ll spend seven days in Liverpool, the Beatles’ hometown. We’ll walk the streets they walked, visit the clubs they played, and even stand in their childhood homes. Then we’ll spend nine days in London, where our concept of rock stars will expand to include such OG luminaries as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and the Royal Family. (Don’t worry – we’ll also visit the Barbican, where Harry Styles filmed his “As It Was” video!). As consumers, we’ll immerse ourselves in all of these experiences. As social scientists, we’ll study them as well.

Course Description:
A study abroad course in England, Scotland, Belgium, and Austria. We will undertake a journey of discovery into medical history from the medieval period to the twentieth century. We will cover multiple facets from barber surgeons to neurosurgeons and everything in between, from the development of aseptic technique and the stethoscope to sulfa drugs, to plastic surgery and the cloning of animals. Special attention to case studies that provide insight into major discoveries and understanding of disease, illness, medical practitioners and practice in different historical contexts and cultures.

Course Description:
Honors travel to Japan is a course designed to expose students to the widest range
of Japanese experience. Museums in Japan are spectacular, food is of the highest quality,
kindness and respect are typical.
Modern living in Tokyo- How the modern survives tradition: contemporary and historic art, shrines, fashion, food and a bullet train. Hotel in Tokyo
Buddhist temple in Kyoto- How the ancient survives the modern- shrines and temples, meditation, tourists, tofu, castles, gardens, dance, a bamboo forest. Stay in Shunkoin Buddhist temple.
Hiroshima - the terror and the healing. How can anyone deal with it or not deal with it? Peace Park Museum, parks, Genpaku Dome. Sleep on Miyajima, hotel.
Miyajima- 3000 year old shrine on a little island outside Hiroshima- catharsis and oysters.
