Nursing Majors

All Nursing students, whether in the Basic, BRAND, or BSNC programs are eligible and encouraged to complete the Honors Minor at the University of Wyoming. The Honors Minor is offered fully online to increase access to this exciting minor for our students; extending this opportunity to students living on campus and taking courses in person, and to students taking courses online in a distance format.

Nursing students interested in pursuing an Honors Minor should contact the Nursing Liaison to the Honors College, Paula Kihn, at pkihn@uwyo.edu. For additional information about completing the course requirements for the Honors Minor, including completing the minor online, students should contact Honors Advising at honorsadvising@uwyo.edu.

Requirements for Nursing students completing the Honors Minor include:

  • Five courses in the Honors College

Required courses for the Honors minor include Colloquium 1 and 2, which are substitutions for University COM1 and COM 2 requirements, and three upper divisions electives. A checklist of curriculum requirements for the Honors Minor can be found at: http://www.uwyo.edu/honors/prospective-honors-students/application/academic-requirements.html

  • Submission of the Honors Capstone Project Proposal Form

  • A research/creative/innovative project

Nursing students may choose to complete a project in one of two ways:

Write a 15-25 page scholarly paper that builds on a project completed in the courses of NURS 4895 or NURS 4845. Generally, the faculty mentor for these projects is typically the instructor for the course. Please reach out to Paula Kihn at pkin@uwyo.edu with questions.

OR

An independent research, creative, or innovative project that may, but is not required to be, related to the field of Nursing. Mentor(s) for these projects may be faculty at the University of Wyoming or a community member with expertise in the field of study. Nursing students pursuing this option should consider applying for funding to support their projects. More information may be found here: http://www.uwyo.edu/honors/opportunities-for-research,-creative-and-entrepreneurial-projects/index.html

  • An oral presentation

Nursing students may choose the venue in which they present their work. They may:

Present their Honors Capstone project during the NURS 4895 EBP presentations. Note that Honors presentations should be longer in length and more developed than the presentation for NURS 4895, and this will count as the oral presentation requirement for the Honors Capstone.

OR

Present (twelve minutes in length) their capstone project at the Honors Roundtable in December (if completing the capstone project in December), present at the Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Across the Disciplines Day in April, or present at another Honors-approved venue such as an international/national/or regional conference.

  • Submission of Capstone Project to the Honors Repository

Students are required to submit their Capstone Project to the Honors Repository unless an exemption is requested. All forms for submitting to the repository are located on the UW Honors Capstone page (http://www.uwyo.edu/honors/current-transfer-honors-college-students/honors-capstone.html ).

  • Faculty Mentor Evaluation

The faculty mentor will evaluate a student’s Capstone Project, indicating whether the Honors student met the agreed expectations for the capstone project. Evaluation is on a pass/fail basis.
